RB brake shims (brake noise and heat insulator) are designed and manufactured to alleviate the squeaky noise that can arise under low speed and light braking. These shims are made of high strength steel plate and coated with high temperature silicon rubber and have proven to effectively eliminate or substantially reduce noise in addition to shielding heat transfer to the caliper.

Brake Shim Installation:

  1. RB shims should be installed directly against the backing plate of the brake pad – Any shims that come with the pads (OE or aftermarket) or RB brake kits (stainless steel shim) must be removed.

  2. Brake pad size can vary slightly from different suppliers; you may have to adjust the clips to ensure a tight fit against the pad.

  3. The shim will add thickness to the brake pad (0.8mm or .030”); you may find it’s too tight to fit in especially when both rotor and pad are new. If this is the case try to install the shims after the pad/rotor have worn in.

  4. Due to the various materials of brake pads, especially on performance pads, total elimination of brake noise is sometimes not possible. However, the noise shall be reduced to an acceptable level.

  5. RB brake shims should work immediately after installation. However depending on your brake set up, it may take a few days or weeks to become fully seated, or if too much wear on rotor/pad a second set of shims may be needed (clips should be removed.)
Brake (anti-squeak) grease or other agents are not recommended in combination use with RB shims as we have tried all these and found out they can generate ill effects as you are experiencing.

How RB brake shim was developed and manufactured:

TPM was the first manufacturer who has successfully developed a series of brake shims for automotive aftermarket since 1987. Our objective was to provide a solution to the brake industry in solving the brake squeaking issue, which was a constant challenge facing the brake parts suppliers as well as brake service companies.

This brake shim program was exclusively marketed by NAPD Inc. - A long term partner of TPM in Mahwah New Jersey. The shims were initially tested, approved and accepted by Midas International and followed by Meineke and other major brake parts manufacturers such as; Wanger, Bendix, Raybestos (Aimco) and national distributors such as; NAPA, AutoZone, CarQuest and Advance Auto etc. under various trade names.

Our brake shim was recognized as the leader in the brake industry as it has proven can effectively abate the noise as a result of our extensive research and development on material and manufacturing process, however over the time more replicas came out with low quality shims at cheaper price (black paint instead of rubber coat).

With the success of our street brake shims our knowledge and experience in design, material, testing production, and know how is well retained. We are now one step further in developing shims for the performance division to be the best noise and heat insulator.
